I can still remember when I was a kid how my Mom was so eager to let us take a nap at noon every time we get home from school and after lunch. Elders were telling us that it can help us grow taller (I guess I didn’t get enough one). As I entered high school and college, naps were no longer part of my daily routine since the demand for time in school was too high. I spent most of my time doing projects, joining mandatory school activities and of course having fun.
Now that I’m already an adult, taking a nap in a day feels like I win a jackpot every time that I wake up. I know, it sounds exaggerated but it’s true! I think that’s one of the things that I look forward to a day too apart from reading and writing. This may be just a little thing for some of us but a power nap has lots of benefits that can bring to us.
It reduces our stress.
I’ve noticed so many changes in my self since I started taking a power nap. Before, the level of stress that I have affects my whole-being wherein small problems make me so hard to deal with even if the solution is already in front of me. I feel like I need to handle things at once which adds more pressure to me and I know, it’s unhealthy. That’s why nowadays, I make sure that I get a few minutes of a nap before I begin dealing with my problems.
It puts us in a better mood.
I know it’s normal to get in a bad mood sometimes but when we start having no control over it, it’s already a different story. Being in a bad mood can make us easily feel irritated and lazy. The worst thing about it is that it can affect the relationship we have with our friends, family and significant other. I’ve experienced all of these things. Sometimes, people ask me what’s my problem, I don’t know what to tell them. I figured out in the end that lacking an “in-between” rest is the main issue.
It helps us to get more focused.
When we begin to feel out of focus with what we’re doing, a power nap can help us regain our energy and gets back our concentration to it once we wake up. Some of us may tend to procrastinate because we don’t feel like continuing or finishing what we’re doing. Taking a power nap will help us to get back our sense of focus because our mind and body already get enough rest it needs.
It improves our memory.
Based on my experience, not taking a nap makes me forgetful. My Mom once told me that it’s not a good sign since I’m still young to be like that unlike her. I thought that reading and writing are enough for me to sharpen my memory but I was wrong. Once, I accidentally fell asleep at noon while reading, when I woke up, I feel so relaxed. I experimented with myself for one week of taking power naps and voila! I felt much better than before. I can now keep up with my to-do-list and even do more than that.
It prevents us from getting sick.
Power naps can also prevent us from getting illnesses. It helps us to decrease the risk of getting heart diseases as well as weight problems. There is much research that proves how effective it can be for humans like us. However, let’s keep in mind along with taking naps, we also have to watch out what we eat, drink and the kind of activities we do. Consuming alcoholic drinks, smoking and not exercising are some of the things that we need to avoid to make sure we’ll stay fit and healthy too.
